If Russia is wealthy with oil, why don't we work out more trade with them to cut ties in the Middle East?

I read in an editorial on Yahoo that Russia got out of debt using it's vast oil resources. If this is true, why doesn't the Western world work out a deal to improve Russian relations and decrease our dependency on Middle Eastern oil? Granted it's still foreign oil, but the less invovlement we have in the Middle East, the better. Any ideas?
